Harvard has been told by the US Department of Homeland Security that it would lose its ability to enroll foreign students if it continues to oppose government requests, including political control and reporting on international students.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem sent a “scathing” letter on Wednesday requesting full data on Harvard’s international students’ “illegal and violent activities” amid US President Donald Trump’s purge of pro-Palestinian activism in US schools.

Noem stated the institution must comply by April 30 “or face immediate loss of Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification”.

Noem added in a tweet, “And if Harvard College fails to verify that it’s within complete compliance with the media’s demands, the institution will be denied its privilege of taking foreign students.”

The letter specifically requested that the university disclose all visa-holder threats against other students or staff, disruption of the learning environment, and disciplinary action taken in response to alleged threats or demonstrations.

According to the Harvard Crimson, the Department of Homeland Security letter accused the university of creating a “hostile learning environment” for Jewish students and reminded that it was “a privilege to have foreign students attend Harvard University, not a guarantee”.

Noem canceled more than $2.7 million in funding to the Ivy League institution, calling it unworthy of government cash and accused it of endangering American ideals and security.

Harvard’s cowardly leadership promotes radical demonstrations and threatens national security, Noem warned.

Trump is furious at the renowned institution, which has produced 162 Nobel Prize winners, for refusing government monitoring on admissions, employment, and politics.

The Trump administration has blocked or terminated grants for Columbia, Princeton, Brown, Cornell, and Northwestern universities in his ongoing assault on pro-Palestinian staff and students.

Harvard has denied several Trump administration demands that would give the government power. Trump then said it was suspending $2.3 billion in funding.

Trump threatened to lose Harvard’s tax-exempt status on Tuesday; CNN reported on Wednesday that the IRS was ready to do so and would make a decision soon.
